West Nile-positive mosquitoes found in Bridgeport

Two pools of mosquitoes trapped at Beardsley Zoo have tested positive for West Nile virus, making Bridgeport only one of two Connecticut cities where the illness has popped up this season. Last month, the state Mosquito Management Program announced that mosquitoes trapped in Stamford tested positive for West Nile.
There have been no human cases yet, and no mosquitoes have tested positive for the much-feared Zika virus that’s sweeping the globe. “This is not unusual,” said Theodore Andreadis, director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, which oversees mosquito trapping and testing in the state. “This is pretty much what we expected for this time of year.”
A total of roughly 122,000 mosquitoes have been trapped and tested in Connecticut this season. Though Andreadis said there’s been a significant amount of West Nile detected in Stamford — a total of 11 pools of mosquitoes have tested positive for the illness — it’s been a relative mild season thus far.
“The number of mosquitoes has actually dropped a bit, probably because of the drought,” he said.
That might change but, so far, Connecticut has been relatively immune to the mosquito fears pervading the nation. Though most of the 1,825 United States residents who have contracted Zika have got it while traveling, there have been six cases of locally-transmitted illness, contracted in Florida.

Though that illness has just made its way into the United States, West Nile has been here since 1999. The illness often has no symptoms, or causes mild illness, but for the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, and other vulnerable groups, it can cause serious illness.
Meanwhile, one Beardsley Zoo official said it isn’t disconcerting that West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been found there. The tourist attraction has been a mosquito trapping site for the state since the virus arrived in Connecticut, and these aren’t the first West Nile mosquitoes to crop up in the area, said director Gregg Dancho.
He said the zoo tries to be vigilant about controlling its mosquito population by, among other things, eliminating pools of standing water where mosquitoes can breed. “We do a very good job of keeping the mosquito population down around here,” Dancho said. “We trying to do the best animal care we can for our charges.”

I admit, this is a topic about which I am passionate. At the helm of the integrative/functional health practice I founded in Irvine, Calif., I’ve worked with hundreds of people suffering from diabetes, thyroid disease, immune disorders and a myriad of chronic and degenerative conditions. It is amazing to see so many patients in our practice reduce the symptoms of, or even reverse, their condition.

I am particularly gratified when considering how many patients have found it possible to reduce, or even eliminate, their need for prescription drugs. How is this possible?

Much has to do with the vantage point of “upstream” versus “downstream” approaches to illness and health.

When a blood test indicates that you have diabetes, what happens? In a “downstream” approach to illness and treatment, the symptom that produced the diagnoses — high blood sugar — is treated with drugs. For example, insulin brings the blood sugar measurements into a normal range, and you’re “managing” diabetes. Except that you’re not.

In contrast, an “upstream” view of health looks to determine the “whys” of a patient’s condition. For instance, many diabetics are confused and frustrated by the fact that they eat better than many people they know, yet they struggle with weight and diabetes, while others eat whatever they want and don't have to worry about their blood sugars. In an “upstream” approach, the real question is — why? Why are my blood sugars high or volatile? Why am I being given medications to “manage” my condition, rather than solutions to address the underlying cause of the problem?

The course of action each individual takes is highly personal, clearly. And in some cases, medication is not only required, but is life-saving. In many cases, however, patients suffering from degenerative disorders may be over-medicated or even wrongly medicated.

This is why integrative/functional medicine is such a vital approach to well-being, and is becoming a force in empowering each of us to return to optimum health. This is personal to me because I suffered from a total of three autoimmune disorders by the time I had reached 28.

The alternatives are daunting. Beyond an epidemic, diabetes is approaching pandemic proportions. In 1985, the worldwide prevalence of diabetes was 30 million people. In 2000, it was 150 million. By 2030, it could be 250 million. It is my personal mission to do all in my power to turn this equation around.

So what can you do?

1. Don’t accept degenerative conditions as “normal.” They are not a normal part of life or of aging and should certainly not become status quo. There is likely much you can do before or beyond prescription medicine.

2. Strongly consider integrative and functional medicine. It is a different approach in which practitioners can often trace underlying causes of disease to its very source. Specialized means of diagnosis can help effectively narrow down the cause, while traditional diagnostics may also be used to confirm findings. Integration of functional and traditional diagnostics and treatments can allow patients to use established therapies where warranted, while also helping to address root causes to slow or even reverse disease progression rather than simply masking symptoms or managing a condition with drugs.

3. Take charge of your own life and health. Ask the hard and probing questions. Fully investigate your alternatives. Make (or at least try) the lifestyle changes that are indicated for your health concern.

You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by being as fully informed and proactive as possible about your well-being and health.
